Bill and Fannie Crawford Faircloth of the Gerrardstown district
Fannie's maiden name was Crawford, and Bill's mother was also a Crawford, both from Virginia, but it's unknown if the couple were related by blood.
James William "Bill" Faircloth and his wife, Fannie, residents of the rural Gerrardstown district of Berkeley County, pose outdoors in serious dress clothing, probably in the 1930s or early 40s.
Fannie's maiden name was Crawford, and Bill's mother was also a Crawford, but it's unknown if the couple were related by blood. Fannie's father was from White Hall in Albemarle County, Virginia, while Bill's mother hailed from Frederick County, Virginia.
Bill's father was a Civil War solider from Georgia who moved to the Gerrardstown region, possibly near Shanghai, by 1870, and found work there as a day laborer.
When Bill was born in 1861, his father, James, was 37. It's unclear who Bill's mother was. One of James' wives, Julia, who was listed as Bill's mother in records, was only 13 when Bill was born, and Julia didn't marry James until Bill was 5 years old. While it's possible she was the biological mother, she may have been his stepmother. In any case, she died at age 23 when Bill was 10, either in childbirth or shortly after.
Bill had twin sisters, seven years younger than him, named Alice "Jane" and Laura Rosetta "Etta."
Both of these sisters' stories are very interesting.
