Tragic death of 8-year-old Thurman Collins, who consumed a household cleaner in the 1920s
Edith Pearl Braithwaite grew up in Gainesboro in Frederick County.
She was descended from the Farmer, Grove, Mercer, Brown, Baker, Strother and Tippett families.
In 1907, at age 19, she married Charles “Edgar” Collins in Winchester. Five months later, their daughter Hilda was born, the first of about 16 children.
In the early years of their marriage, Edith and Edgar lived in the Stonewall region, where he was a farmer.
By 1921, when they were in their early 30s, they had moved with their then-eight children to the Gerrardstown district of Berkeley County.
